A hidden bloodstain beneath a freshly refinished floor has turned a months-long missing-person investigation in suburban Lake County into a murder case—with the missing man's remains still nowhere to be found. Two Mundelein men now face first-degree murder indictments tied to the disappearance of Ruslan Furman.
A Lake County grand jury returned indictments Wednesday charging Dmitry Bogatiryov, 52, and Damen Voranoff, 56, with first-degree murder in Furman's death, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The men were already in custody on unrelated charges and were expected to make their first court appearance on the murder counts Thursday.
Furman, 51, disappeared in November 2025 after investigators said he had been visiting acquaintances in unincorporated Mundelein. Earlier in the investigation, Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported that detectives considered the circumstances suspicious and believed foul play could be involved.
Investigators Say The Floor Hid A Crucial Clue
The alleged turning point came during a search of a home connected to Bogatiryov, where detectives noticed freshly stained hardwood floors and newly painted walls. Blood found on portions of the wall and beneath the flooring was later identified as Furman's, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Investigators also recovered a reciprocating saw that tested positive for Furman's blood, along with a nearby burn pile containing charred pieces believed to have come from a couch inside the home. Surveillance video allegedly showed Bogatiryov and Voranoff buying muriatic acid and other items at a hardware store.
Detectives believe the men beat Furman inside the residence, left him there to die, then dismembered his body and disposed of the remains. That account remains an allegation in the criminal case, and Furman's body has not been recovered.
Diamond Lake Searches Have Not Found Furman's Remains
Search efforts have included sheriff's detectives, specialized dive teams, firefighters and other law enforcement agencies. In April, Patch reported that investigators had identified likely suspects while continuing searches around Diamond Lake and other areas.
Authorities have searched Diamond Lake multiple times but have not located Furman's remains. The continued search is expected to remain a central part of the case as prosecutors prepare for the next stage of court proceedings.
Prosecutors Seek To Keep Both Men Detained
The Lake County State's Attorney's Office plans to ask a judge to keep Bogatiryov and Voranoff detained while they await trial. The murder indictments are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
