Bloomington police are searching for 30-year-old Abdulrahman bin Damnan, who is accused in court documents of raping a woman he met through a dating app on June 16. Investigators say the two first met up at a bar, then went back to his apartment on the city’s west side, and they now believe he may have left Bloomington, possibly even Indiana. A warrant from Monroe Circuit Court 2 orders that Damnan be held without bond pending a hearing.
According to Fox 59, court records state that Damnan and the woman matched on the dating app Hinge, met for drinks at a bar, and later went to his unit in the 1000 block of S. Sugar Maple Place on June 16. The affidavit alleges he tried to pull off the woman’s shorts even after she said “no” multiple times, and detectives say neighbor security-camera footage appears to back up her timeline. Apartment management told investigators that Damnan “left unexpectedly” and even left personal belongings behind, according to the report.
What the Charge Carries
Damnan faces one Level 3 felony count of rape. Under Indiana law, a Level 3 felony carries a fixed prison term between three and 16 years, with an advisory sentence of nine years and potential fines, as spelled out in the statute. Judges can move above or below the advisory term depending on aggravating or mitigating factors at sentencing. The statute’s language is reproduced at Justia.
Where Investigators Say He Went
Detectives told Fox 59 that traffic-camera checks show Damnan’s vehicle traveling north near Fort Wayne on June 16, and that his phone number appears to have been changed or disconnected. A detective also said Damnan immediately requested a lawyer and refused to answer questions when contacted. Police say they are actively working to locate him and are asking anyone with helpful information to come forward.
