A Cooper City man was killed Sunday evening when his BMW crossed into oncoming traffic on Griffin Road and collided with another vehicle, shutting down a busy stretch of the eastbound lanes, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 6:20 p.m. on June 21 in the 8700 block of Griffin Road near Southwest 87th Avenue in Cooper City, Broward County. Deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded and closed the eastbound lanes while they worked the scene and cleared wreckage and debris, Local 10 reported. At least one person was taken to a hospital for treatment, the station added.

BSO Traffic Homicide detectives told Boca Post that Arie Levy was driving a 2016 BMW 750 westbound on Griffin Road when he "failed to maintain control" of the car. Investigators said the BMW traveled southwest into the eastbound lanes, where the front passenger side of a 2020 Chevrolet Trax driven by Nicole Thomas struck the rear passenger side of the BMW in a sideswipe-type collision.

Deputies provided life-saving measures to Levy at the scene, according to Boca Post. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported him to Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Detectives told Boca Post it is possible Levy suffered a medical event before the crash, a factor they are continuing to examine.

Investigation and Local Traffic Context

BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation and will keep interviewing witnesses and reviewing physical evidence from the scene to determine what triggered the collision. Griffin Road is regularly cited as one of Cooper City’s busiest and higher-crash corridors, a pattern noted in police quarterly reports. That record of incidents is part of how officials shape enforcement strategies and safety planning, according to a City of Cooper City report.

Authorities warned drivers to expect lingering lane closures and delays while the investigation continues, and residents who travel Griffin Road near Southwest 87th Avenue were advised to watch for follow-up traffic impacts, according to Boca Post. The Traffic Homicide Unit continues to process the scene and gather evidence, and motorists were told to anticipate residual slowdowns in the area as that work wraps up, Local 10 reported.
