A grim discovery along a busy Fort Lauderdale corridor has police treating a possible hit-and-run as a homicide investigation in the making.
Fort Lauderdale police say a body was found Monday morning near the roadway in the 2600 block of West Commercial Boulevard. Detectives were on scene and are working to determine whether the person had been riding a bicycle when they were struck.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, officers received a call about the body at around 8:15 a.m. Investigators believe the incident involves a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle. The outlet reports that the deceased person’s identity has not been released and that no arrests have been made.

Monday’s case comes only a few weeks after another deadly crash involving a bicyclist in the city. About three weeks earlier, a rider was killed on the SE 17th Street Causeway bridge, and police later arrested a suspect in that incident, according to CBS Miami. Authorities said surveillance video helped them identify a suspect, and charges were filed in that earlier investigation.
What the law says
Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is a felony under Florida Statute 316.027 and can carry prison time and driver’s license penalties, according to the Florida Senate. If a driver is identified in Monday’s case, prosecutors would decide whether to pursue charges based on the evidence gathered by investigators.
