After deliberating, jurors returned an acquittal on the charge of first-degree murder with a firearm, according to WPBF. The same outlet reported that a separate charge of abuse of a dead human body had already been dropped and that the judge ordered Jean-Francois released once the not-guilty verdict was read.
Shooting On East Palm Drive Sparks Homicide Probe
Investigators said the shooting unfolded on the 3000 block of East Palm Drive on June 21, 2023, where officers found a man with a single gunshot wound to the back, according to earlier reporting by WPTV. He was rushed to Delray Medical Center.
Witnesses told detectives that an argument about a girlfriend spiraled into a physical fight, and police later identified Jean-Francois through a photo lineup. Investigators also said they found insurance paperwork bearing his name in a car parked at the home, according to the station’s account of the initial investigation.

The case played out at the Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach, with Judge John J. Parnofiello on the bench, Reuters-licensed photos show. Over five days, jurors heard from witnesses and saw the evidence tying Jean-Francois to the scene before ultimately deciding prosecutors had not proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
From Attempted Murder Charge To Full Acquittal
Prosecutors first charged Jean-Francois with attempted murder after the June 21 shooting, then upgraded the charge to first-degree murder after Poitier died on June 28, 2023, according to WPBF. With the jury’s not-guilty verdict and the dropped body-abuse charge, the judge ordered Jean-Francois released from custody.
As of Friday, it was not immediately clear whether the State Attorney’s Office would pursue any additional charges stemming from the fatal shooting.
