A 20-year-old West Palm Beach woman is facing serious charges after deputies say she set several vehicles on fire and tried to ignite a house on Breezy Lane in the early hours of July 4. Surveillance video allegedly shows the woman pacing in the driveway, splashing what appeared to be barbecue lighter fluid on multiple vehicles and the front of the home, followed by a sudden flash and flames spreading across the property. Authorities estimate about $40,000 in damage and say the case is still under active investigation.
Deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office say they arrived around 6:40 a.m. to find several vehicles and other items in a driveway already burning, according to CBS12. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage that they say shows a woman, later identified as Christine Leger, spraying what looked like BBQ lighter fluid on the front of the home and on parked vehicles. The video reportedly captures a large flash at the front door, after which the vehicles become fully engulfed. Arson investigators concluded that the fire was intentionally set and determined that multiple vehicles, including a Nissan Altima and a Honda Pilot with a trailer attached, were destroyed in the blaze.
Charges and legal context
Leger was booked on charges that include attempted murder, first-degree arson and criminal mischief, counts that the sheriff's office says reflect how dangerous the incident could have been. Under Florida law, first-degree arson, which covers willfully setting fire to a dwelling or other occupied structure, is classified as a first-degree felony, according to Florida Statutes, Chapter 806. Statutes governing murder and attempted murder, along with the state's general penalty provisions, outline the potential sentencing range for such offenses, as detailed in Florida Statutes, Chapter 782.
Neighbors say tensions escalated
Neighbors told investigators they had previously heard the suspect making threats and had seen her near the Breezy Lane property several times. The property owner also reported earlier incidents, including damaged property, slashed tires and broken windows, according to CBS12. Officials say those prior reports helped guide investigators as they worked to piece together what happened on the morning of July 4.
Where the case goes from here
Leger was booked into the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center, which the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office lists at 3228 Gun Club Road in West Palm Beach, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Prosecutors are expected to review the investigation and decide how to proceed, and formal court filings will determine what charges move forward. Authorities did not immediately release information on bond or arraignment. The sheriff's office has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators.
