Chandler voters sent a clear message at the ballot box, handing longtime city councilmember Matt Orlando a decisive win over state Rep. Jeff Weninger in the city’s high-profile mayoral race.
Orlando, a retired Air Force colonel and veteran of Chandler politics, built a commanding lead that prompted Weninger to publicly concede after Tuesday’s election.

Unofficial results from the Maricopa County Elections Department show Orlando with 21,654 votes (58.24%) to Weninger’s 15,472 (41.62%), a roughly 17-point spread out of 37,178 ballots counted. Turnout landed at about 24%, according to KTAR.

Orlando has called Chandler home since 1983 and has logged six terms on the City Council, pairing his public service with a lengthy executive career at Honeywell. Council races and Proposition 415
Voters were also reshaping the rest of city leadership. In the City Council contests, Jane Poston, Angel Encinas and Cicely Rocha-Miller led the field for three open seats, according to the Maricopa County Elections Department unofficial tally.
On the policy side, voters overwhelmingly backed Proposition 415, Chandler’s General Plan update, with about 84% voting yes.

Officials are expected to finalize and certify the results in the coming days. Barring any significant changes, Orlando will succeed term-limited Mayor Kevin Hartke. The incoming mayor and council will immediately face big-ticket decisions on growth, water and public safety, the same issues that dominated the campaign trail and helped shape Tuesday’s verdict at the polls.
