A Miami man is behind bars after police say he broke into his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s apartment and attacked her with a machete. Freddy Delgado, 43, was booked on multiple counts that include armed battery, burglary with assault, and aggravated battery of a pregnant victim. The woman, who told officers Delgado is the father of her unborn child, ran into a locked room and called 911. She later declined medical treatment.
Inside the alleged attack
According to NBC 6 South Florida, the pair had been seeing each other for about four months, and their relationship ended on July 18, the same day as the alleged attack. The victim told officers the two had argued throughout the day and said Delgado struck her and grabbed her face while she was at his home earlier. When officers later responded to her apartment, she reported that Delgado had forced his way inside and attacked her with a machete that was lying on a bed.
How police tracked him down
NBC 6 South Florida reports that officers spotted Delgado while patrolling Little Havana, and the victim identified him. Police say he "waived his Miranda Rights and admitted in a body camera video that he did fact break into the victim's apartment." He was then taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center for processing.
What the charges mean under Florida law
Under Florida law, an assault on a pregnant person or the use of a deadly weapon can elevate a battery charge to aggravated battery, which is classified as a second-degree felony.
