The review appears in Nature Reviews Microbiology and is authored by researchers including Karen Levy and Elizabeth J. Carlton. The team synthesizes decades of studies and concludes that meteorological drivers such as temperature, heavy rainfall, flooding and drought influence bacteria, viruses and parasites in different ways. That mix makes simple, one-number projections of future disease burden unrealistic, and the authors call for pathogen-specific modeling and adaptation strategies to better predict and prevent outbreaks.
Why One-Size-Fits-All Strategies Could Fail
In a campus summary, the Colorado School of Public Health at CU Anschutz underscores the paper’s warning that more frequent extreme weather could reverse gains against waterborne illness. "We want people to know climate change changes the conditions that allow pathogens to spread," co-author Elizabeth Carlton told CU Anschutz. The review points to examples such as heavy rains flushing microbes into drinking water supplies and droughts increasing risk by limiting access to safe water. In other words, the same storm that fills reservoirs can also deliver a gut-level public health problem.
Colorado’s Climate Combo Raises the Stakes
Colorado has been wrestling with prolonged dry conditions, active wildfire seasons and episodic heavy rainfall that together raise the odds of water contamination and infrastructure damage. Federal monitoring shows sizeable portions of the state remain in drought, according to Drought.gov. Late-season storms can also trigger flash flooding that strains drainage and treatment systems, according to data from NOAA's Climate Service. When those extremes overlap, they can stress water utilities, change how people use water and open more doors for pathogens to reach people.
Researchers Push ‘No-Regrets’ Moves for Officials
The review and CU Anschutz recommend what they describe as "no-regrets" investments: climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure, expanded pathogen-specific surveillance and stronger vaccination programs where vaccines exist. These moves, the authors say, cut today’s disease burden and help communities roll with future climate extremes, according to CU Anschutz. Local health departments and water utilities are urged to pair traditional monitoring with climate-aware planning so that responses match the specific pathogens most likely to be circulating as weather swings harder.
Local media picked up the paper this week. CBS News Colorado aired a segment Wednesday tying the review’s findings to the state’s recent weather whiplash. Researchers told reporters that tighter surveillance and tougher water systems can blunt the worst impacts, and Colorado agencies are watching closely as monsoon storms and wildfire seasons play out this summer.
