A woman riding a bicycle was killed Thursday afternoon when a pickup truck hit her in a central Phoenix intersection, police said, turning a busy commuter crossing into a crime scene.
Officers were called to 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road at about 4 p.m. Responding units found the bicyclist unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver stayed at the intersection and cooperated with officers, according to Arizona's Family.
Police have not yet released the woman’s identity. Investigators also have not said whether the driver could face charges, leaving key questions about how the crash unfolded still unanswered.
Recent bike collisions in the Valley
Thursday’s death is the latest in a string of serious bicycle crashes around metro Phoenix.
On June 9, Phoenix police reported that a bicyclist died in north Phoenix and that a driver was taken into custody in connection with that case, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Statewide crash data
State numbers show the problem is not limited to a single intersection or neighborhood. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Crash Facts logged 1,379 bicyclist crashes in 2024 and identified pedestrian and cyclist collisions as a priority for highway safety work, according to ADOT.
Investigation ongoing
Officials have not released additional details about what led up to Thursday’s collision or any possible contributing factors. The Phoenix Police Department’s media-advisory archive lists multiple fatal-collision investigations in recent months, highlighting how frequently deadly crashes are being probed across the city, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
