One person was killed and two others were hurt in a crash on the northbound lanes of I-485 near Albemarle Road in northeast Charlotte on July 2, 2024, police said. Emergency crews shut down the northbound side of the outer loop while investigators worked the scene, backing up traffic and wrecking the morning commute for drivers trying to get around the city.
According to WCNC, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the collision on I-485 northbound near the Albemarle Road exit. Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries, and traffic stayed clogged for hours while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage.
Part Of A Bad Stretch On The Outer Loop
The deadly crash is the latest in a run of serious wrecks along I-485 this summer. On June 21, a multi-vehicle collision involving two tractor-trailers killed a driver and left another in critical condition, and police later announced an arrest in that case, according to WBTV.
A separate crash on July 15, when a motorcyclist reportedly struck the back of a van near I-85, also left one person dead and briefly shut down the outer loop, as reported by WSOC. The string of high-impact incidents has pushed traffic headaches and safety concerns along the loop back into the spotlight.

Transportation planners have long flagged the Albemarle Road and I-485 interchange as a congestion and crash hotspot, and regional project files show ongoing studies and proposals aimed at easing capacity pressures and improving safety, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Local crash analyses also place the corridor among Charlotte’s more active crash locations, a pattern safety advocates routinely cite when calling for engineering fixes and tougher enforcement.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is still investigating the July 2 wreck and has not released the names of the people involved, per WCNC.
