What started as an hours-long police standoff on Brownlee Road in Decatur ended Thursday evening with the arrest of 50-year-old Deacon Hopkinsbey, who is accused of raping a woman while she slept at a Stone Mountain home, deputies said.
According to Atlanta News First, DeKalb County deputies allege Hopkinsbey assaulted the woman on May 26, then holed up at the Brownlee Road residence as law enforcement tried to get him to come out. Deputies and Atlanta police spent hours negotiating before finally taking him into custody around 6:30 p.m.
Deputies: Alleged Assault Happened in Stone Mountain
Investigators say the alleged attack took place at a Stone Mountain residence while the victim was asleep, according to Atlanta News First. The incident in Stone Mountain set off the search that eventually led deputies to the Decatur home, where the prolonged standoff unfolded.
DeKalb Standoffs and Community Impact
DeKalb County residents have seen scenes like this before. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution documented a similar five-hour standoff in 2023 that also ended with an arrest. These barricade incidents typically pull in specialized units, lock down streets for hours and leave neighbors rattled while officers work to bring things to a close without anyone getting hurt.
What’s Next
Hopkinsbey is being held without bond, according to Atlanta News First. Any formal charges would be handled by prosecutors in the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office. Hopkinsbey is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
