Dick's Sporting Goods is getting ready to seriously bulk up in South San Jose, with plans to leave its longtime Sunrise Plaza spot for a massive new store on Blossom Hill Road that would more than double the chain's footprint in the city.
The sporting goods retailer is designing a nearly 99,000-square-foot location at 920 Blossom Hill Road that would replace its current Sunrise Plaza store near Oakridge Mall and create one of the largest standalone sporting goods destinations in the area, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
From Sunrise Plaza To The Oakridge Corridor
According to Visit San Jose, Westfield Oakridge, commonly known as Oakridge Mall, sits at 925 Blossom Hill Road and anchors the busy Blossom Valley retail corridor. Dick's has long operated nearby at Sunrise Plaza, but that presence now looks like a warmup lap compared to what is planned on Blossom Hill.
Dick's still lists its San Jose shop at Sunrise Plaza in the company's DICK'S Sporting Goods store directory, and a mortgage prospectus filed with the SEC shows Dick's assumed a lease at Sunrise Plaza dating back to the Sports Authority era.
Why Bigger Stores Are Back
Dick's has been rolling out larger, more experiential formats across the country, including its "House of Sport" concept, and the company has signaled that it is not shy about spending on new and expanded stores.
Recent materials from DICK'S Sporting Goods show the chain is prioritizing destination-style, higher-traffic formats that can take over former department store boxes and pull in regional shoppers rather than just neighborhood walk-ins.
Timeline And What Comes Next
The Blossom Hill project is currently in the design phase and does not yet have a listed opening date, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal. If the lease terms are finalized and city approvals line up, the new store would still face months of tenant improvements and construction before opening its doors.
That means shoppers along Blossom Hill Road should expect to see permit filings and, eventually, visible construction work as plans move ahead. For now, the relocation remains on the drawing board, with more details likely to emerge once the retailer or property owner publishes an official schedule and opening plan.
