A septic-tank tanker truck overturned and burst into flames on Florida’s Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade on Thursday morning, killing the driver and shutting down the highway in both directions near Bird Road. The fiery crash turned the midmorning drive into a standstill, as troopers closed the toll road and a passenger from the truck escaped while the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Official traffic log
According to the Florida Highway Patrol's live traffic report, the crash is listed as a fatal incident that blocked all northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike between Southwest Eighth Street and Bird Road. The log places the wreck near the Bird Road interchange and notes a full roadway closure while troopers handled the emergency response and traffic control.
What news crews saw
WSVN reported that the septic-tank tanker had been heading south on the Turnpike when the driver lost control. The truck overturned, slammed into the concrete barrier in the center median and caught fire. According to the station, two people were inside the vehicle. The passenger managed to escape, but the driver was trapped and was later pronounced dead. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews arrived and put out the flames.
Traffic impact and response
According to NBC6 South Florida, the Turnpike closure in both directions north of Bird Road led to long backups on surrounding surface streets, with officials urging drivers to seek alternate routes. Troopers and fire crews remained on scene for investigation and cleanup, and authorities did not immediately release the driver’s identity or any suspected cause of the crash.
Why tanker rollovers are serious
According to the Volpe Center, cargo-tank rollovers are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in hazardous-materials transportation. Researchers found that liquid surge inside the tanks and driver performance often contribute to these crashes. The study recommends more robust tanker-specific driver training and broader use of safety technologies to help prevent rollovers and the fires or spills that can shut down major highways for hours.
