A quiet morning in Forsyth County turned tense on Tuesday when bullets ripped through a child’s bedroom wall along Kelly Mill Road, triggering a shelter-in-place order and an hourslong manhunt. No one inside the home was hurt, according to sheriff’s officials, and deputies later arrested a man now facing felony aggravated assault charges.
What happened
Shortly after 8:30 a.m., 911 calls started coming in about a dispute in the 1600 block of Kelly Mill Road. During that confrontation, investigators say someone opened fire on a vehicle that later appeared at a nearby business riddled with bullet holes.
As deputies worked the scene, authorities told residents to stay indoors and lock their doors while they tried to piece together what happened. Despite bullets punching through the child’s bedroom wall, no one in the house was injured, according to The Georgia Sun.
Manhunt, SWAT and capture
Forsyth County SWAT locked down a house on Kelly Mill Road and recovered a firearm they believe was used in the incident, though the suspected shooter was not initially located inside. K‑9 teams and a drone unit joined the search, scouring the surrounding area.
The break came when a nearby resident reported movement in her backyard. Deputies followed up and found the suspect around 2 p.m., taking him into custody without incident. Authorities identified him as Jason Simmons, according to CBS News Atlanta.
Vehicle, second arrest
Investigators tracked down the bullet‑damaged car at a business at the corner of Bethelview Road and Kelly Mill Road. A woman at the scene told deputies that James Treadwell had left the area before officers arrived.
Deputies later found Treadwell near Buford Dam Road and Nuckolls Road and arrested him on outstanding warrants out of Henry County. Officials say those warrants are unrelated to Tuesday’s shooting, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Investigators have not released a motive or explained how the people involved are connected.
Charges and what’s next
Simmons is charged with felony aggravated assault, and detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are now interviewing him as the case moves forward. “This individual endangered the lives of multiple citizens today,” Sheriff Ron Freeman said, crediting the multi‑agency response that helped bring the manhunt to a close, as reported by CBS News Atlanta.
Officials say they expect additional charges as they continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
