Frontier Airlines is stepping away from McGhee Tyson Airport after Aug. 17, 2026, pulling its nonstop link between Knoxville and Denver while stressing that the move might not be permanent. Airport officials and local leaders say they are working to keep connections open and that a seasonal Frontier comeback is still on the table.
Frontier's network pullback hits Knoxville
Frontier’s decision in Knoxville is part of a larger summer reshuffle in which the carrier is exiting six markets and cutting more than 20 routes. Aviation outlet Bolt Flight reports that Knoxville’s last Frontier flight to Denver is scheduled for Aug. 17 as the airline shifts planes to higher demand hubs.
Airport officials say the gap may be brief
In a statement to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority spokespeople said they expect the departure to be temporary and that Frontier has indicated plans to come back with seasonal flying. Airport leaders noted that the market has added new service this year and that they will keep courting airlines to restore capacity.
What travelers should do
Passengers holding tickets on Frontier’s Denver flights are being urged to review their itineraries and line up alternate carriers or one stop options, since Frontier will no longer operate the route after mid August. According to FlyKnoxville, several other airlines continue to serve McGhee Tyson and list nonstop options that may cover late summer travel.
Why carriers are pulling back
Industry observers say Frontier is focusing on denser, more profitable markets and trimming low frequency routes that struggle to sustain year round service. That view is echoed by Bolt Flight, which notes that the airline is redeploying aircraft to busier hubs instead of maintaining many thin routes.
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority says it will continue promoting the market to airlines and exploring seasonal options for bringing Frontier back. For now, travelers have until Aug. 17 to use Frontier’s Denver nonstop; after that, expect schedules and fares at McGhee Tyson to shift as airlines adjust capacity.
