A gas line leak shut down all northbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike in south Palm Beach County on Tuesday morning, grinding the mid-day commute to a halt and drawing a large emergency response to the scene. Troopers and fire rescue crews converged near mile marker 73 as motorists were forced off the toll road, with traffic spilling onto the Sawgrass Expressway and clogging nearby surface streets.

According to WPTV, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said they were called to the gas leak at about 10:45 a.m. Fire Rescue units and Florida Gas representatives also responded, and the State Warning Point was notified. WPTV reported that all northbound lanes remained closed while crews worked to track down and isolate the source of the leak.

The agency also requires pipeline operators to notify the National Response Center and PHMSA for reportable releases, file formal incident reports, and alert federal authorities within specific timeframes. Officials say those rules are designed to speed up emergency response and public safety coordination, and to give investigators the data they need to track causes and impacts of pipeline incidents.
