Jesus Monsivais Jr. has been ordered to spend 35 years in state prison for the 2020 shooting death of Oscar Rene Castillo Jr., who was gunned down outside his Northwest Side home on December 29, 2020. Monsivais, who was 18 at the time of the killing and is now 23, received the sentence under a plea agreement reached this week in a Bexar County courtroom.
State District Judge Michael Mery credited Monsivais with roughly 1,918 days already served in county custody, and under the terms of the deal, Monsivais must serve at least half of his sentence before he can even be considered for parole, according to KENS5.
How the Deadly Confrontation Unfolded
Police say the trouble started when Castillo stepped outside his home on Brentcove Street in the gated Finesilver Ranch subdivision after spotting a pickup truck roll through the neighborhood. He confronted the people inside the vehicle, and things escalated fast.
Surveillance video and witness statements show that several occupants, including Monsivais, got out of the truck and argued with Castillo before Monsivais allegedly opened fire and hit Castillo once, according to KSAT. Investigators later tracked down the truck and identified Monsivais as a suspect, and booking records show his initial bond was set at $200,000.
The Deal That Avoided a Life Sentence
Under the plea agreement, Monsivais admitted to the killing and accepted a 35-year sentence, a move that kept him from rolling the dice at trial where he could have faced a possible life sentence, KENS5 reported.
Judge Mery’s credit for time served means a significant chunk of that 35-year term is already on the books. The San Antonio Express-News notes that relatives of Castillo will be allowed to deliver victim-impact statements at a later hearing. Court officials have said Monsivais will be transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after those remaining procedural steps are wrapped up.
Life Inside the Gate, Crime at the Curb
The killing rattled Finesilver Ranch, a neighborhood where many residents thought the gate code and security cameras kept the worst problems out. Neighbors told reporters they were stunned that a fatal shooting happened inside their subdivision and described Castillo as a “good guy” and a devoted father, according to KSAT.
The case also renewed local conversations about how effective gated entries really are and how much neighborhoods now rely on their own security cameras and doorbell footage to help police piece together what happens when violence erupts on an otherwise quiet cul-de-sac.
