A quiet Gulfport house hid a grim secret, and now the woman who lived there will spend the rest of her life in prison. Prosecutors say 69-year-old Jerri Lynn Isreal-Roby admitted she killed her 42-year-old son, John Gaither, and sealed his body in a wooden box behind a false interior wall in their home.
Isreal-Roby pleaded guilty this week to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life on Wednesday. The case began in late December 2023, when worried relatives reported Gaither missing and started getting texts and letters in his name that felt off, investigators said.
At the plea hearing, District Attorney Crosby Parker said the guilty plea should provide “a measure of justice, accountability, and closure” for Gaither’s family, according to WLOX. Circuit Judge Randi P. Mueller pressed Isreal-Roby on parts of her story and pointed to steps prosecutors say she took to separate herself from the crime. Prosecutors and the court said the life term reflects both the brutality of the killing and the elaborate effort to hide it.
How Investigators Found the Body
Detectives eventually focused on the house itself. After relatives flagged those strange messages, investigators obtained a search warrant for Isreal-Roby’s home on the 2200 block of 16th Avenue, according to the Tampa Free Press. Behind what looked like a normal interior wall, they discovered a wooden box holding Gaither’s body.
An autopsy later found that Gaither died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Inside the home, officers also turned up a Home Depot receipt from the week before Gaither vanished, listing multiple bags of sand, straw, tape and other supplies investigators say were used to conceal the body, the outlet reported.
Alleged Cover-Up and Forged Messages
Prosecutors say the killing was followed by a messy, months-long cover-up. Isreal-Roby allegedly forged letters, sent text messages and enlisted others to pose as Gaither in an effort to convince relatives he had left the country, according to WLOX.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew D. Burrell told investigators that Isreal-Roby admitted staging phone calls and moving Gaither’s cell phone to Florida so location data would make it look like he was there. In an interview, she claimed she shot her son “in the spur of the moment” to put him “out of his misery,” the station reported.
A Violent Past That Figured in the Probe
Isreal-Roby’s criminal history loomed over the investigation. Records show she has used multiple names and has a decades-long record in Florida. In 1993, she fatally shot a woman in Boca Raton and later pleaded to a reduced second-degree murder charge, serving time in prison, according to the Sun Herald. Investigators said that past helped them build a timeline and secure the warrant that ultimately led to Gaither’s body.
Co-Defendant Arrested; What’s Next
Isreal-Roby was not the only one pulled into the case. Authorities also arrested 86-year-old Robert Wayne Tannehill on hindering-prosecution charges after tracking trips he allegedly took with Isreal-Roby to purchase supplies later used to hide the body, according to the Tampa Free Press.
A Harrison County grand jury indicted Isreal-Roby in May 2025 on first-degree murder and a weapons charge. With her guilty plea now entered and a life sentence in place, prosecutors say charges against others involved in the case remain on the table.
With the sentence handed down, prosecutors said they hope the outcome offers at least some closure to Gaither’s relatives, even as unanswered questions linger about how long his body remained hidden in the house, according to the Sun Herald. Neighbors who once described the mother and son as quiet told reporters the case has left a deep chill in a part of Gulfport that rarely sees headlines this dark.
