The call came in just after 4 a.m. in the 5200 block of Wiley Street in Hollywood, Florida. Fire tore through the already condemned home, leaving heavy damage, but authorities did not immediately report any other injuries as crews worked the scene from the street.
What Officials Say Happened
According to NBC6 South Florida, Hollywood Fire Rescue said a man in his 40s with what they described as "severe mental illness" intentionally set a portion of the residence on fire, then refused to come out, which triggered an extended standoff with police. Firefighters were forced to battle the flames from outside while officers worked to get the man to surrender. He was eventually taken into custody without incident, and the condemned structure was left with extensive damage. Police transported the man to a hospital, though they did not immediately disclose his condition or specify potential charges.
