One driver is dead and westbound I-24 is completely shut down near Whites Creek after a wreck involving three semi-trucks Thursday morning, turning the Old Hickory Boulevard exit into a sudden bottleneck for Nashville traffic. The crash is unfolding along a corridor where a few blocked lanes can quickly become a much larger commute problem.
The crash was reported shortly after 10 a.m. near Old Hickory Boulevard at mile marker 40.6, according to WSMV, which cited the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SmartWay map and Metro Nashville police. One driver died, while the conditions of the two other drivers were not known as of late morning.
Police requested TDOT assistance with the response, and westbound traffic was being diverted off I-24 at the Old Hickory Boulevard exit. Drivers heading that way should check TDOT SmartWay for incident and closure updates, since the early report did not provide a reopening time.
Another Deadly Crash Near Whites Creek This Year
The shutdown comes after a separate April crash on I-24 near Whites Creek Pike killed 29-year-old Juan Marin-Ramirez, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. That earlier wreck involved a Honda and BMW, not semis, and officials have not indicated that the two incidents are connected.
Authorities have not released the identities of those involved in Thursday’s crash or described what led to the three-truck collision. The investigation and cleanup were continuing, with additional information expected from police and transportation officials.
