A pre-dawn argument on Chicago’s Northwest Side turned deadly early Saturday when, according to police, a 47-year-old woman wrestled a gun away from a man, then fatally shot herself in the head.
Officers were called around 3:30 a.m. to the 5000-block of West Sunnyside Avenue in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. The woman was taken in critical condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was later pronounced dead.
What police say
Chicago police said the woman had been arguing with an armed man when she managed to disarm him, then used the gun on herself, according to ABC7 Chicago. The Chicago Police Department has classified the case as a homicide and has assigned Area Five detectives to investigate.
Investigation and neighborhood context
Local reporting has previously noted that the mix of bars, transit stops and late-night foot traffic near Sunnyside Avenue can leave people exposed to trouble. That includes a June stabbing near the Jefferson Park transit center, as previously reported by Hoodline. In that earlier case, a man was also taken to Lutheran General, underscoring how nearby trauma centers regularly handle serious Northwest Side emergencies.
What remains unclear
Authorities have not released additional details about the man involved in the argument, and no arrests were reported in the initial response, ABC7 Chicago reported. Area Five detectives remain on the case, and investigators are continuing their on-scene work. Police officials say they will release more information as it becomes available.
