A 47-year-old Little Village mother of four is dead after a driver struck her in a crosswalk and fled, leaving neighbors to mourn a woman they say spent years helping others. Community leaders are now pressing for answers as police search for the white truck involved.
The crash happened Wednesday around 11:41 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Hamlin Avenue, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Police said Belesda Toledo was walking westbound in a crosswalk when the truck hit her and continued south on Hamlin Avenue without stopping. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and later died from her injuries.
The Little Village Community Council described Toledo as deeply loved by her family, friends and neighbors. The Helen & Joe Community Organization also remembered her as a longtime volunteer who regularly helped with housekeeping and supported people in the organization’s community work.
Illinois Law Requires Drivers To Stop After Injury Crashes
Under Illinois law, a driver involved in a crash causing injury or death must stop, remain at the scene, and provide required information. The rule is outlined in the Illinois Vehicle Code, though investigators have not announced any charges in Toledo’s death.

The case echoes another fatal hit-and-run in Little Village last year, when 72-year-old Maximiliano Lemus Pantoja was killed while crossing near West 26th Street. CBS Chicago reported that police released a description of the suspected vehicle in that investigation, underscoring how even partial details can help narrow a search.
For Toledo’s family, the immediate focus is finding the driver and preserving the memory of a mother whose community work made her a familiar and valued presence. Organizers are asking anyone who saw the crash, noticed the white truck or has information about the driver to come forward, according to the latest report from FOX 32 Chicago.
