What began as a fight outside a Yuba City 7-Eleven yesterday ended in gunfire that left two young men dead and another person wounded, turning a busy Market Street parking lot into an active crime scene.
Officers rushed to the 900 block of Market Street after reports of a fight and gunshots. According to The Sacramento Bee, police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators said the 21-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and an 18-year-old victim died later at a nearby hospital. No arrests had been made as of Monday, and the California Department of Justice was assisting Yuba City detectives with collecting and processing evidence, the paper reported.
Scene at Market Street 7‑Eleven
The shooting unfolded outside the 7‑Eleven in the 900 block of Market Street, the chain's Yuba City location at 929 Market St, in a commercial stretch not far from downtown. Witnesses described a heavy police response as officers taped off the parking lot and worked into the night while detectives documented the scene.
Nearby businesses locked their doors as the investigation got underway. Police said they were reviewing surveillance video from the store and other cameras in the area, along with cellphone footage from bystanders, to figure out how the initial fight escalated into a deadly shooting.
Victims, Coroner and Next Steps
Yuba City police said the two people killed were men aged 18 and 21. The 21-year-old man died at the scene, while the 18-year-old later died at a hospital. A third man showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand, according to investigators.
The Sutter County coroner's office said it would release the victims' names after relatives had been notified. The investigation remained active Monday, with detectives continuing to track down witnesses and review video evidence, The Sacramento Bee reported.
