Miami is starting Thursday mostly clear and around 81 degrees, but the calm morning will give way to a dangerous afternoon heat surge. The high is expected to reach 92 degrees, with humidity pushing the heat index as high as 109 degrees in parts of the metro area.
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday for metropolitan and coastal Miami-Dade County, with heat-index values expected to reach 106 to 110 degrees. The National Weather Service warns that the combination of heat and humidity could cause heat-related illness.
Mostly Dry, Breezy Afternoon Ahead
Rain chances will remain low around Miami on Thursday, generally staying in the single digits to low teens through the afternoon. Southwest winds will increase to about 8 to 15 mph, with gusts near 20 mph possible as temperatures climb.
The better chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be farther inland and north of the Miami area, while coastal neighborhoods are expected to stay largely dry. Thursday night will remain partly cloudy and muggy, with a low near 81 degrees and heat-index values still reaching about 105.
Storm Chances Rise This Weekend
Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 91 degrees, followed by a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Rain chances increase Saturday, when a 40% chance of afternoon and evening storms accompanies a high near 90.
Showers and thunderstorms remain possible Sunday through Wednesday, with daily rain chances ranging from 30% to 52% and highs staying near 89 to 90 degrees. The pattern will be wetter than Thursday, but the humidity will continue to keep mornings and afternoons feeling hotter than the thermometer suggests.
Heat Safety Remains The Main Concern
Drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the advisory period and take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. Officials also recommend checking on relatives, neighbors and anyone especially vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults, young children and people without reliable cooling.
