A late-night holdup at a Morton Grove hotel ended across the city in Hyde Park, where police say two men were tracked down and arrested after a gunshot, a fast getaway and a multi-agency search in the air and on the ground.
Morton Grove police say the pair forced their way into a room at the Red Roof Inn and robbed guests over the weekend. One of the suspects is now facing a stack of felony charges that include attempted murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault. No one was hit by gunfire, but investigators say a round was fired before the suspects took off and were later caught in Chicago.
According to Morton Grove police, officers were called around 10:18 p.m. Saturday to the Red Roof Inn in the 9400 block of Waukegan Road for reports of shots fired. Investigators say two men forced their way into a guest room, and that one of them showed a handgun and demanded cash before both left the scene. Those details were reported by CBS Chicago.
Detectives said an automated license plate reader, help from the Illinois State Police and the Cook County Sheriff's helicopter unit all played a role in spotting the suspects' vehicle in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, where officers moved in and arrested the two men. Police identified the suspects as 27-year-old Manuel Antonio Pimentel-Rodriguez, who was charged with attempted murder, home invasion, armed robbery and aggravated criminal sexual assault, and Jorvin J. Gil Duran, who was charged with home invasion and armed robbery. "One round was fired, but no one was hit," police told CBS Chicago.
Charges and Court Date
Pimentel-Rodriguez and Gil Duran are expected in bond court Monday for a pretrial detention hearing at the Second Municipal District courthouse in Skokie. The courthouse, which handles suburban felony preliminary hearings, is at 5600 Old Orchard Road, according to Cook County courts. Both defendants are presumed innocent at this stage, and prosecutors will decide whether to seek that they remain in custody while the case moves forward.
Police Ask for Witness Tips
Morton Grove police are asking anyone who may have information or video related to the hotel robbery to contact the department as detectives work to nail down the full timeline of what happened. Investigators have not released any information about a possible motive and say the probe is still very much active.
