A Sunday night ride on a familiar Northeast Portland overpass ended in tragedy when a motorcyclist crashed and died on the Northeast 33rd Avenue overpass at Northeast Columbia Boulevard, according to Portland police. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 8 p.m. and found the rider on the ground. Emergency medical responders later determined the rider had died.
The overpass was shut down between Northeast Dekum Street and Northeast Columbia Boulevard while officers investigated, snarling traffic in the area as drivers were rerouted around the closure.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has folded Columbia Boulevard and nearby arterials into its Vision Zero work and corridor-improvement planning, aiming to reduce deadly and life-altering wrecks. Local advocates and planners have repeatedly pushed for traffic-calming measures and design changes on NE 33rd to slow drivers and make the corridor safer.

Authorities have not released the rider's name, and Portland police have not yet shared any information about what they believe caused the crash. The overpass closure triggered delays in the surrounding area and prompted police to urge drivers to steer clear until the scene was cleared.
