A child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition Saturday evening after a near-drowning at a private pool in Plantation, according to officials. Fire crews responded to a home on the 4600 block of West Broward Boulevard, pulled the child from the water, started life-saving efforts and took the child to a nearby hospital.
CBS News Miami reported that Plantation Fire Rescue crews arrived to find CPR already underway. The outlet said the child was transported in critical condition and that no additional information had been released, including the child’s age or how they ended up in the pool. According to the station, Plantation Police were contacted for comment.
Recent Drownings In Broward
In the last few weeks, multiple local outlets have reported several child drownings and near-drownings across Broward County, prompting increasingly urgent warnings from first responders. Coverage from Local 10 and the Miami Herald has detailed recent incidents in Plantation and North Lauderdale that left children either dead or in critical condition.
What Officials Are Urging
State and local officials are stressing what they describe as layers of protection in and around the water, including active adult supervision, four-sided pool fencing, alarms, life jackets and formal swim lessons, along with CPR training for caregivers. The Florida Department of Children and Families notes that drowning is the leading cause of death for children under five and reports that 119 children drowned in 2025. Officials also point out that Plantation’s fire department offers community CPR classes and water safety resources for residents.
