Pre-dawn gunfire on the Southwest Side left a 26-year-old man clinging to life early Sunday in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Officers found him on the 6300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, and he was rushed to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
What police say
Officers responded around 2:10 a.m. to a report of a person shot and discovered the man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to his left arm and abdomen, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Area One detectives have been assigned to the case.
Investigation underway
Police have not released any information about a suspect or motive as detectives process the scene and canvass the area for witnesses. The shooting comes amid a modest uptick in citywide violence this year, with WTTW reporting that Chicago recorded 210 homicides through the end of June and about 686 shooting incidents so far, according to Chicago Police Department data.
Neighborhood history
The Kedzie corridor has seen recent gun activity. In mid-June, Gunfire Near 65th And Kedzie ended with two people detained. That earlier incident has underscored local concerns about safety and the ongoing need for outreach and enforcement in Chicago Lawn.
