A Miami Gardens man who once avoided prison time after a deadly 2019 shooting is now staring at possible jail after prosecutors say he violated probation by renting a car later tied to a separate homicide scene.
According to CBS News Miami, prosecutors allege Jatwan Phillips rented a vehicle that investigators connected to another murder investigation. The station reported that if that rental is proven, it could amount to a material breach of the probation deal that kept Phillips out of prison in the earlier case.
Phillips was sentenced in connection with the 2019 death of a 17-year-old and ordered to complete a county boot camp program followed by ten years of probation, according to Local 10. The victim, Joshua Ancrum, was a rising high school football prospect who had attracted scholarship interest, The Washington Post reported.
What Florida Law Allows
Under Florida law, as outlined in Florida Statute 948.06, a court may issue an arrest warrant if there are reasonable grounds to believe a probationer has violated supervision. After a revocation hearing, a judge can revoke probation and impose any sentence the court could originally have given, or choose instead to modify or continue probation depending on the evidence presented.

The allegation will likely reopen wounds for Ancrum’s family. At Phillips’ 2021 sentencing, Ancrum’s mother urged the court to find some positive outcome from the tragedy, Local 10 reported.
