A 21-year-old man is behind bars after Memphis police say a Facebook Marketplace meetup in the Raleigh area ended with a PlayStation 5 taken at gunpoint. Investigators say the victim and his nephew dropped the console and bolted for the victim’s mother’s car when the suspect walked up with a gun.
Investigation and arrest
According to WREG, the robbery happened in the 4700 block of Royal Elm Cove. Detectives used Memphis Police Department databases to build a photo lineup, and the victim identified 21-year-old Myron McGhee as the suspect. Officers later took McGhee into custody.
WREG reports that the PlayStation 5 was valued at about $350.
Marketplace meetups are risky
This case is not an isolated one. As an earlier PlayStation sale turned armed robbery shows, private sales in and around Memphis have taken a dangerous turn more than once.
Police and city officials routinely urge buyers and sellers to meet in busy, public places and to avoid handing over items or cash anywhere that feels even remotely sketchy. The Murfreesboro Police Department, for example, points to a “Safe Exchange Zone” at its headquarters as a model for safer in-person Marketplace-style transactions.
Charges and next steps
Per WREG, McGhee is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Memphis police say the investigation is still active as detectives continue interviewing witnesses and following up on leads. Anyone who knows more about what happened is urged to reach out to investigators.
