Roo, a recently adopted runaway dog, is back with his owner after spending two days hunkered down in a dark San Francisco Caltrain tunnel. Train operators initially feared they were looking at a dog struck by a train, but Roo moved, and that small sign of life set off a rescue.
According to ABC7 News, operators spotted Roo and first thought he had been hit. They soon realized he was alive but staying still in the tunnel, prompting animal-control personnel to enter the dark rail passage and bring him out safely.
A Microchip Helped Turn A Tunnel Rescue Into A Reunion
Roo had recently been adopted and was microchipped, giving rescuers a way to identify him and contact his owner. After two days underground, the dog was reunited with the person who had been looking for him.
The happy ending also highlights why identifying details matter when pets go missing. San Francisco Animal Care & Control says its officers scan animals for microchips after bringing them to safety, while the agency’s lost-pet guidance urges owners to keep registration and contact information current.
For Roo, a frightening detour through one of San Francisco’s rail tunnels ended with a ride home instead of a trip to the shelter. The tunnel is back to being a tunnel, and Roo is back where every recently adopted dog belongs: with his owner.
