San Francisco is waking up cool and damp today, but the city will quickly trade the early chill for sunshine and a high near 72 degrees. The afternoon will bring a familiar summer tradeoff: bright skies overhead, with west-southwest winds building along exposed streets, hills and bridges. There is no rain in the forecast, but the ocean remains a serious concern.
Temperatures should rise through the morning before leveling off in the low 70s, with winds increasing to 6 to 15 mph and gusts up to 22 mph. The National Weather Service San Francisco expects mostly clear conditions tonight, with temperatures dipping back to around 57 degrees.
Sunny Afternoons, Warmer Weekend Ahead
Tomorrow will be sunnier and warmer, with a high near 76 and southwest winds gusting up to 20 mph. Saturday is expected to be the warmest day in San Francisco’s near-term forecast, reaching about 78 degrees before highs ease to the mid-70s from Sunday through Wednesday.
That mild city forecast masks a much hotter setup inland. Interior parts of the North and East Bay, the Diablo Range and the Central Coast face a rising heat and fire-weather threat, with some interior Central Coast locations potentially nearing 110 degrees Saturday.
Beach Hazards Continue Through Saturday
A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Pacific Coast beaches through Saturday afternoon, warning of sneaker waves, strong rip currents and breaking waves up to 10 feet at some south- and southwest-facing beaches. The conditions are tied to a long-period swell that can produce a deceptively calm stretch before a much larger wave rushes up the sand.
The warning is an extension of the shoreline danger described in earlier Hoodline coverage. Ocean Beach, Pacifica, Stinson Beach and Santa Cruz are among the locations highlighted by forecasters, though hazardous surf can affect other exposed beaches as well.
Beachgoers should stay out of the water, keep away from jetties, piers, rocks and other waterside structures, and never turn their backs on the ocean. A long quiet pause between waves does not mean the danger has passed, particularly for children, pets and anyone standing close to the waterline.
Dry Inland Conditions Raise Fire Concerns
While San Francisco stays relatively comfortable, dry air and poor overnight humidity recovery will continue across higher elevations and interior areas. Forecasters are urging residents to avoid activities that could create a spark, especially near dry grass, brush and forested hills.
For city residents, Thursday is a good day for a sunny outing with a windbreaker packed for the afternoon. For anyone heading to the coast, the surf—not the sunshine—should be the deciding factor.
