A man was found shot to death inside a car in Fort Lauderdale early Wednesday, after police followed a gunfire alert and discovered the vehicle with the victim still inside. Homicide detectives and crime-scene technicians stayed on scene into the morning as the killing turned a quiet block into an active crime scene.
Gunfire Alert Sends Officers Into Overnight Canvass
According to CBS Miami, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1300 block of Northwest 13th Court just before 4:30 a.m. While checking the area, they found a man with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The outlet reported that homicide detectives and crime-scene investigators continued working the area and that the shooting investigation remains active.
NBC6 South Florida reported the ShotSpotter alert was logged at about 4:24 a.m. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department lists its non-emergency number online, and tipsters can call 954-764-4357.
Yet Another Overnight Killing Rattles Fort Lauderdale
The latest homicide follows other late-night violence across Fort Lauderdale, including a parking-garage shooting downtown earlier this month that left one man dead, as reported by late-night garage gunfire. ShotSpotter, the gunfire detection system that alerted officers in the latest case, was approved for use by the city commission in 2020, WLRN reported.
Police have not publicly identified the victim or released any suspect information.
