A Friday night shooting in Kendall ended with a man in the hospital and deputies piecing together a trail that started with a gunshot detection alert, according to authorities.
Deputies said they were first dispatched around 9:45 p.m. after a ShotSpotter alert flagged possible gunfire near Southwest 103rd Avenue and 172nd Street. When they arrived, they did not find anyone injured at that location, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
As deputies investigated the alert in the area, another unit was sent to the 1400 block of Tyler Street following reports that someone had been dropped off there. That is where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, officials said. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, and investigators have not released his identity.
How deputies tracked the scene
ShotSpotter is a network of acoustic sensors that alerts authorities to suspected gunfire and has been in use in Miami-Dade County for years as part of real-time crime operations, according to Atlas of Surveillance. The alerts can get deputies on scene quickly, but officers still have to confirm what happened through canvassing neighborhoods and speaking with witnesses.
Investigation ongoing
No arrests have been made as detectives work to sort out the circumstances of the shooting, according to NBC 6 South Florida. The sheriff's office has not released the victim's age or identity, and investigators have not said whether anyone else was involved.
