Indiana University Bloomington is confronting a troubling wave of sexual violence reports this summer, with a string of alleged incidents surfacing in late June. Police logs and campus office records show cases linked to on-campus housing and IU's Bradford Woods outdoor center, triggering referrals to university investigators and renewed scrutiny of what support is available to survivors.
According to the Indiana Daily Student, the IU Police Department has received 23 reports of sexual violence so far this summer. The paper cites alleged incidents that include a June 12 report tied to Walnut Grove residence hall, a June 25 report at the Walnut Grove Center, and an incident reported as occurring between June 21 and 26 at Bradford Woods. Several of the cases were reported to the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and passed along to university officials for review. IUPD public information staff told the IDS that some of the people involved did not report directly to police, and that investigations or administrative reviews remain in progress.
Where the reports occurred
Walnut Grove Center and the Walnut Grove residence complex sit on the northwest edge of IU's Bloomington campus. IU Housing describes Walnut Grove as a multi-building residence center on North Walnut Grove Street. Bradford Woods is Indiana University's 2,500-acre outdoor campus and retreat center located between Bloomington and Indianapolis, according to the program's website at Bradford Woods. Those facility descriptions help explain why the reports involve both traditional residence halls and university-run programs away from the main campus.
How incidents are classified
The Indiana Daily Student also reported that IUPD recorded 60 cases of sexual assault on the Bloomington campus in 2024, a figure drawn from university reporting. Under Indiana law, "sexual battery" is defined as the nonconsensual touching of another person's private body parts to satisfy sexual desires, according to the state code, and university policy follows federal UCR categories when it labels different offenses. Those legal and policy definitions help determine whether an incident is handled as a criminal investigation, a university conduct case, or both. Because several of the recent reports were routed through the Office of Civil Rights Compliance, a referral alone does not mean criminal charges will follow while reviews or investigations continue.
Why many incidents never reach police
National research and advocates note that sexual assaults are often underreported, which makes it difficult to get a full picture of campus safety. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center provides research and resources on these reporting gaps. That backdrop helps explain why what survivors disclose to health centers or advocacy programs does not always show up in daily police logs. Campus leaders and advocates say that clearer information about confidentiality, reporting paths, and available support can influence whether a survivor decides to come forward.
Where survivors can get help
Indiana University maintains confidential supports that include the Sexual Assault Crisis Service (SACS) 24-hour line and Confidential Victim Advocates. The university's Survivor Resources Hub lists SACS at 812-855-8900 and the Confidential Victim Advocates at 812-856-2469. The IU Student Government's resource page and other campus guides point students and employees to campus hotlines, medical services, and local advocacy partners for immediate and long-term assistance. National options such as RAINN also offer 24/7 confidential support. Confidential and nonconfidential reporting options are available through university and community providers if you or someone you know is seeking help.
IUPD and university officials say investigations and administrative reviews tied to the June reports are ongoing. Any criminal charges or formal disciplinary outcomes would be announced by the university or local law enforcement. Coverage will be updated as public filings, crime notices, or official statements are released.
