San Francisco wakes up today to a cool start before sunshine takes over, with temperatures climbing from the upper 50s into the low 70s. The city is forecast to reach about 74 degrees, but a persistent coastal breeze and dangerous surf will keep the day from being a carefree beach postcard.

Morning low clouds and fog should retreat toward the coast by midmorning, although some shoreline neighborhoods may stay gray longer. Southwest winds will run about 5 to 14 mph, with gusts up to 22 mph and the strongest breezes arriving during the afternoon and early evening. Exposed waterfront spots, bridges and hilltops may feel noticeably windier.
Beach Plans Need Extra Caution
The National Weather Service has a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through Saturday afternoon for Pacific Coast beaches. A long-period southerly swell could produce sneaker waves, strong rip currents and breaking waves up to 10 feet along some south- and southwest-facing beaches. Stay out of the water, keep away from jetties and rocks, and never turn your back on the ocean.
Inland Heat Builds Into The Weekend
San Francisco stays relatively mild through the week, with highs near 73 tomorrow, 76 Friday, 79 Saturday, and 76 Sunday before easing back into the mid-70s early next week. Farther inland, temperatures will be much hotter, with Moderate HeatRisk expected from Thursday through Sunday and an elevated fire-weather threat continuing in dry terrain. Anyone heading inland should carry water, limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat, and never leave people or pets in a parked car.
