A 2-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle in a residential West Park neighborhood, authorities said. Emergency crews rushed the child to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he later died. The driver remained at the scene while traffic homicide detectives opened an investigation.
According to Miami Herald, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened near the 100 block of Allen Road in West Park. BSO did not release the names of those involved, the release said.
Investigation underway
In a news release, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said its Traffic Homicide Unit has taken over the probe and deputies were canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage. Officials said they had no immediate update on the vehicle or whether charges would be filed as investigators work to piece together the crash timeline.
Local pattern of deadly crashes
The incident is the latest to jar the small city. In March, Broward deputies searched for a driver who struck a pedestrian on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard and left the scene; that victim later died, according to reporting by Miami Herald. That case raised fresh concerns about pedestrian safety on busy corridors that cut through West Park and neighboring communities.
