A broad-daylight shooting near Steiner and Bush ended with a suspected gunman in custody after police used a victim’s video, a license-plate reader and a drone to track his yellow vehicle. The arrest came without further incident, but investigators say the case remains active.
How Police Found The Yellow Vehicle
In yesterday's release, the San Francisco Police Department said officers responded last Thursday after a 911 caller reported that her car window had been shot out and described a yellow vehicle fleeing recklessly. Officers found the shattered window, obtained a license plate from video recorded by the victim, and used the department’s Drone as First Responder program and Real Time Investigation Center to determine where the vehicle had gone.
The case arrives as San Francisco continues expanding its use of aerial surveillance during active investigations. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that SFPD logged 3,558 drone deployments during the first five months of 2026, with most categorized as criminal investigations, while the department’s Real Time Investigation Center combines drone footage with license-plate readers and other camera systems.
The technology is moving beyond one-off emergencies, too. Mission Local reported that SFPD is planning a drone-first-responder pilot in SoMa this fall, building on the department’s existing citywide use of drones to help assess calls before officers arrive.
Suspect Booked On Multiple Felony Allegations
SFPD said the drone maintained visual contact while a Northern Station sergeant located the suspect vehicle in a nearby parking lot, and officers detained a man matching the shooter’s description as he walked toward it. Police said they recovered a handgun near the vehicle and found unspent ammunition inside, then booked the adult male suspect on allegations including attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, willfully discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and multiple concealed-firearm offenses. His identity has not been released, the department said, and the allegations have not been tested in court; anyone with information can contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411 with the message beginning SFPD.
