Pittsfield police officers rushed to the 200 block of Onota Street around 9:21 p.m. Tuesday after a ShotSpotter alert and a wave of calls from residents reported gunfire in the area. Two adult men were later treated at Berkshire Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, and officers recovered shell casings scattered across Onota Street and the streets that intersect it.
Details of the shooting came in a media release from the Pittsfield Police Department, authored by Lieutenant John Soules and authorized by Chief Marc Maddalena, that went out Wednesday morning. The department said the case remains under investigation and that no further information would be released at this time, while asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to call 413-448-9700 or text PITTIP along with a message to TIP411 at 847411.
Twenty-Five Rounds, Immediate Lockdown
The scale of the gunfire went beyond what the department's statement described. Officers were told that roughly 25 rounds were fired near the Onota and Walnut Streets intersection, according to iBerkshires.com, prompting officers to temporarily block off Onota Street between Linden and Walnut Streets while they searched the area.
Scanner traffic monitored roughly 15 minutes into the response suggested an innocent bystander had been hit, the outlet reported, though Pittsfield Police did not confirm in their public statement whether either of the two wounded men was a bystander. That leaves an open question for investigators: it's still unclear whether suspects or vehicles have been identified, or whether either victim was targeted at all.
A Neighborhood With a Fraught History
Onota Street has been the scene of major police responses before. In March 2022, 22-year-old Miguel Estrella was fatally shot by Pittsfield police near the intersection of Onota Street and Woodbine Avenue during a mental health crisis call, as reported by WAMC; a Berkshire District Attorney investigation later declined to file criminal charges in that case.
The corridor also saw a separate shots-fired incident in November 2022, when police recovered shell casings but found no injuries, according to a report from iBerkshires.com. ShotSpotter's Hospital-Funded Origins

Pittsfield originally implemented ShotSpotter in March 2017 after accepting a $300,000 gift from Berkshire Health Systems to cover the acoustic gunshot detection system's initial contract costs, iBerkshires.com noted at the time. The sensors are designed to pinpoint gunshot locations within 80 feet.
Berkshire Health Systems is the same network that runs Berkshire Medical Center, where the two wounded men were treated. The hospital is a 298-bed non-profit community hospital designated as a Level III Trauma Center, and per Mass.gov, it handles major regional emergency and trauma admissions across Western Massachusetts.
Chief Maddalena's Department Amid a Broader Crime Dip
Chief Maddalena, who authorized Wednesday's release, was appointed Pittsfield's permanent Chief of Police this past March after more than 25 years with the department, including a stint leading its traffic unit; he succeeded retired Chief Thomas Dawley, iBerkshires.com reported. He now oversees a department navigating a citywide violent crime rate that, while falling, still outpaces national norms.
Pittsfield recorded 219 violent crimes in 2024, a rate of 511.3 per 100,000 residents that sat 42.4% above the national average even after a 21.1% year-over-year decrease, according to OpenCrime. Property crime in the city also declined that year, dropping to 531 total reported incidents.
Department Resources and How Investigators Could Get Help
The Pittsfield Police Department operates out of headquarters at 39 Allen Street with roughly 97 sworn officers covering a population of about 43,000 residents, according to PoliceApp, with patrol officers split across three shift squads around the clock.
For complex violent crime cases, local police can draw on the Berkshire District Attorney's Violent Crime Section within the Berkshire Law Enforcement Task Force, a unit created in September 2021 that combines municipal officers with Massachusetts State Police detectives, per Mass.gov. Whether that task force has been brought in to assist with the Onota Street investigation has not been disclosed.
