A 57-year-old man died at the hospital Tuesday after being shot during an argument between two employees at a U-Haul business in West Nashville, and the gunman who opened fire has not been found. Metro Nashville Police officers rushed to the scene on Annex Avenue and administered emergency aid, but the victim did not survive his injuries. The shooter fled the property after the gunfire and remains unidentified as investigators continue searching for him.
According to Fox 17, officers responded to a 911 call from the U-Haul store on Annex Avenue Tuesday and found the man wounded before he was taken for treatment. Police say the confrontation broke out between two workers at the location, though the outlet reports investigators have not disclosed what the argument was about. As of Wednesday morning, Metro Nashville Police had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect, and the investigation into finding the gunman continues.
Store Identified as U-Haul Moving & Storage of Hillwood Plaza
The business sits at 3741 Annex Avenue near Hillwood Plaza, operating as U-Haul Moving & Storage of Hillwood Plaza, a facility that rents moving trucks and self-storage units to West Nashville customers. Neither U-Haul nor police have released the names of the two employees involved in the dispute that turned deadly.
It isn't the first violent gun crime reported on that stretch of road. An arrest affidavit obtained by Fox 17 shows that in February 2025, Metro Nashville Police responded to an armed carjacking at 411 Annex Avenue, an apartment complex along the same corridor, where a suspect pointed a handgun at a victim and threatened to kill them.
A Corridor Reshaped by a Decade of West Nashville Growth
Annex Avenue functions as a primary arterial linking Charlotte Avenue and Robertson Avenue, designated a Priority 1 route in the city's road maintenance network, according to Nashville Newsletters. The Annex Avenue and Charlotte Park corridor has undergone rapid residential and commercial redevelopment over the past decade, according to Nashville Scene, transforming what was once a suburban fringe into a busy commercial strip.
Workplace Shootings Reflect a Troubling National Pattern
The Nashville shooting fits into a larger pattern of gun violence tied to workplace disputes. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released in February 2026 found that 470 U.S. workers were killed in workplace violence incidents in 2024, with firearms responsible for 80.6 percent, or 379, of those occupational homicides, according to an analysis by IntelliSee. Roughly 24.6 percent of all workplace homicides occur in retail and commercial sales settings, per a separate review of federal workplace safety data by Building Security Services.
Advocacy group Safer TN reported in November 2025 that workplace shootings frequently stem from employment or interpersonal disputes, pointing to a case in Cleveland, Tennessee, where a terminated worker fatally shot a colleague at a manufacturing plant. Nationally, escalating altercations were the largest category of U.S. firearm deaths in early 2026, accounting for more than 800 fatal incidents in February alone, according to Everytown Research. Tennessee has allowed adults 21 and older to carry handguns without a permit since 2021, per an analysis from Omnilert.
Investigation Continues as Suspect Remains at Large
The Metro Nashville Police Department, which tracks firearm-related incidents and escalating altercations as an operational priority across Davidson County, said the search for the gunman is ongoing. Investigators have not released the shooter's identity, a motive for the argument, or a suspect description, leaving the case unresolved as of Wednesday.
