LAPD Central Division closed 6th Street between Wall Street and Maple Avenue, announcing on social media that officers had a suspect in custody as the investigation continued.
The closure and the underlying investigation were announced in a post from LAPD Central Division, which serves as the official account for the division covering Downtown Los Angeles. The advisory read simply that 6th Street was closed between Wall and Maple due to the ongoing investigation and that a suspect had been detained. Police did not release additional details about the victim's condition, the suspect's identity, or the weapon involved, leaving much of what happened still unclear.
What stands out about the location is its proximity to law enforcement itself. LAPD's Central Community Police Station sits at 251 East 6th Street, according to City Clerk records — placing the closed block of street directly alongside the very station whose detectives are handling the case. The segment between Wall and Maple also falls within the central corridor of Skid Row, per city planning documents describing the neighborhood's roughly 50-block footprint in Downtown LA.
A Neighborhood That Keeps Seeing Knife Violence
Thursday's incident is not an isolated case for the area. LAPD homicide detectives investigated a fatal stabbing on the 500 block of North Main Street near Skid Row's northern border back in May, a case Hoodline covered when it reported on a 63-year-old victim pronounced dead at the scene. In November 2024, Central Division officers and LAFD paramedics responded to a stabbing on South San Pedro Street — a block that runs parallel to Wall and Maple — that left three people injured, two of them with serious knife wounds.
The pattern lines up with what researchers have found about Central Division's overall caseload. A 2026 UCLA study examining LAPD crime records from 2020 through 2024 found that Central Division accounted for 27.3 percent of all reported cases in its dataset, or 5,889 cases, the largest share of any division in the city. Separately, LAPD COMPSTAT metrics released in public filings showed Central Community Police Station logging a 4.1 percent year-to-date increase in violent crime over a recent three-month tracking period, even as property crime in the same window dropped 23 percent.
Potential Charges Still Unclear
Because no charges have been announced, it remains an open question whether prosecutors will pursue a homicide count or a lesser assault charge once the investigation concludes. If the case were to proceed as a homicide, California Penal Code Section 187 defines murder as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought, carrying a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison, or capital punishment, according to legal analysis from DCD Law. Alternatively, if the case is charged as assault with a deadly weapon under Penal Code Section 245(a)(1), penalties could reach up to four years in state prison and fines as high as $10,000, per the Goldstein Law Group. Skid Row's Broader Struggles Continue
The stabbing adds to a difficult stretch for a neighborhood that hosts one of the nation's largest unhoused populations even as officials work to address it. Public health metrics reported this year show the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services' Skid Row Action Plan has placed roughly 1,000 people into permanent housing and about 2,000 into interim shelter, progress that has not eliminated the area's exposure to violent crime.
