A husband and wife from Alamo, Tennessee are facing child sex crime charges as part of an ongoing Crockett County investigation, with 39-year-old Timothy Vales charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, two counts of rape of a child, and aggravated rape of a child, while 34-year-old Denise Vales faces charges of facilitation of rape of a child and child abuse.
The couple's arrests, reported per deputies, mark the third development in an investigation that has stretched across West Tennessee since July, according to WREG.com. Two other men, 39-year-old Jason Cooper Powell of Memphis and 34-year-old Kendrick Brown of Jackson, were arrested in July in connection with the same investigation. Powell faces two or more counts of aggravated statutory rape along with 38 additional counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, while Brown was charged with rape and 19 counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.
Arrests Made at a Workplace and a Residence
Court records reviewed by the station show one suspect was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at a residence, while the other suspect was arrested at their workplace. The station's report does not specify which suspect was apprehended at which location.
Court dockets from Crockett County General Sessions indicate that Timothy and Denise Vales were already facing local charges of child abuse, neglect, or endangerment in the weeks before the more serious felony sex crime charges were filed in August, according to Crockett County General Sessions records. Cellphone Warrants Point to a Widening Probe
The Crockett County Sheriff's Office said in a July 24 statement that investigators executed search warrants on multiple cellphones during the investigation, warning at the time that additional suspects could face charges as digital evidence continued to be reviewed, per the Crockett County Sheriff's Office. That forensic review helps explain the high count totals against Powell and Brown, since Tennessee law allows prosecutors to bring a separate count of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor for each distinct image or visual file recovered from a device, under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-17-1004.
Jail records published by the Crockett County Times show Powell was booked into the Crockett County Jail following his July 24 arrest on the 38 exploitation counts and two counts of aggravated statutory rape. What the Charges Carry Under Tennessee Law
Timothy Vales's continuous sexual abuse of a child charge falls under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-518, a Class A felony that applies when three or more acts of child sexual abuse or rape are committed against a minor over an extended period, according to Justia Law. Federal prosecutors announced in early August that a California man had received a life sentence following a joint investigation that began when Crockett County Sheriff's Office deputies assisted state troopers in locating a missing teenage girl who was being sex trafficked, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. That 2024 roadside response by Crockett County deputies ultimately helped unravel a larger trafficking network.
Crockett County is a rural stretch of West Tennessee spanning 266 square miles with a 2020 census population of 13,911, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Its county seat, Alamo, sits about 20 miles from Jackson and is home to roughly 2,336 residents. The current investigation adds to a string of recent public safety stories out of the small community, which saw a jail escapee flee earlier this year and, just last week, saw another West Tennessee couple sentenced to 22 and 15 years for trafficking a minor.
The investigation remains active, and no additional details have been released about the identity of the victim or victims. Officials have not said whether further arrests are expected, though the July warning about ongoing cellphone forensic review suggests the case may not be finished expanding.
