A boy has died after jumping from London Bridge into the water below in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, an incident that triggered an emergency search and ended with the boy being airlifted 150 miles to a Las Vegas hospital. Witnesses reported that he went underwater, briefly resurfaced, and then went under again without coming back up, prompting a frantic rescue effort in the channel beneath the historic span.
According to 12News, people called police after seeing the boy jump from the bridge and fail to resurface. The Lake Havasu City Police and Fire Department launched a water search, with officers and firefighters providing care and life-saving measures once he was located. He was found underwater and unresponsive around 9:12 a.m. on August 11, per the station's report.
A Lake Havasu City Police Department press release, cited by The Bee, detailed that civilian boat operators volunteered their vessels to assist first responders during the search, which allowed a fire department crew member equipped with lakeshore rescue gear to enter the water and locate the boy. He was taken to Havasu Regional Medical Center in critical condition, the same date, according to the same account.
Airlifted to Las Vegas After Initial Treatment
Following emergency treatment at Havasu Regional Medical Center, the boy was transferred to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, for further treatment, 12News reported. Police were notified early on August 12 that he had died from his injuries, as reported by KTAR News. The Lake Havasu City Police Department is investigating the incident.
The roughly 150-mile transfer to a Las Vegas trauma center reflects the region's limited access to higher-level pediatric critical care, with local hospitals in Lake Havasu City often relying on out-of-state facilities in Las Vegas or Phoenix for the most severe cases, per the research surrounding the incident.
A Landmark With a 45-Foot Drop
London Bridge spans 930 feet across the artificial Bridgewater Channel and measures approximately 45 feet in clearance above the water at its highest point, according to the United States Coast Guard. The bridge connects mainland Lake Havasu City with Pittsburgh Point, known locally as the Island, and is the drop point for what became a fatal fall into the channel below.
The bridge's granite exterior originally spanned London's River Thames before city founder Robert P. McCulloch purchased it in 1968 for nearly $2.5 million, according to History.com. The structure was shipped via the Panama Canal and reconstructed over a concrete frame in Arizona, reopening in October 1971. It remains one of the state's top tourist attractions and, per an AP photo caption, served effectively as a landlocked landmark for nearly 50 years before its relocation.

Drownings and water rescue calls remain a recurring issue for regional law enforcement. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office Division of Boating Safety, for example, recovered a 21-year-old swimmer who submerged and died near London Bridge Beach in Thompson Bay in June 2020, underscoring the broader water safety challenges tied to Lake Havasu's heavy summer tourism and warm waters.
Infrastructure Plans Already Underway Near the Bridge
The tragedy comes as Lake Havasu City has already been working to address the London Bridge corridor's limitations as the city's sole primary arterial link to the Island.
