A man wearing a bucket hat, a striped polo shirt, light-colored jeans and white tennis shoes walked into the Commerce Bank at 6336 Brookside Plaza, displayed a gun and demanded money before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as somewhere between his mid-20s and 30s, and he remains at large as federal investigators work to track him down.
According to KMBC, law enforcement is actively searching for the suspect who held up the Kansas City bank. Witnesses who spot the suspect or have information should call 911 immediately, or reach the FBI directly at 816-512-8200.
A Branch With a Troubled Past

The branch's history stretches back further. In May 2015, federal prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Missouri charged a Kansas City man with robbing $1,971 from the same location before he tried to escape by breaking into a nearby home on East 65th Terrace. And in March 2009, a Kansas City man made off with $1,780 from the branch using a handwritten demand note; he was later sentenced to eight years in federal prison.
Federal Charges and Sentencing Exposure
Under federal law, committing bank robbery carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, a term that can climb to a statutory maximum of 25 years when a dangerous weapon or firearm is displayed during the crime, per the U.S. Department of Justice. A federal grand jury in Kansas City returned an indictment charging a 41-year-old local man with federal bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a June bank heist elsewhere in the metro area, according to the Great Bend Post.
Nationally, physical crimes against federally insured financial institutions have been on the decline, dropping from 2,440 reported incidents in 2019 to 1,740 in 2022, according to data cited by ASIS International. Even so, the Brookside area has seen other robbery reports.
Public Safety Concerns Around Brookside Plaza
The commercial lot immediately next door has also seen trouble. Kansas City Missouri Police Department records show an armed robbery occurred in October 2024 in the parking lot of 6330 Brookside Plaza, right beside the bank building.
The Commerce Bank building sits at Brookside Plaza and Meyer Boulevard, along the 63rd Street corridor. The corridor along 63rd Street has otherwise been a bright spot for local business this year, with new walk-up food services and dining expansions opening near Brookside Plaza, as Hoodline has previously reported.

It remains unclear whether surveillance cameras captured the suspect's direction of flight or a getaway vehicle along the busy Brookside Plaza corridor, and whether federal prosecutors will take over the case once he is identified.
