Café Trio Vanishes After 17 Years as Louie's Reserve Takes Over Plaza Patio

After 17 years serving Kansas City diners on its covered patio overlooking Mill Creek Park, Café Trio has closed its doors under that name for good. In its place, at 4558 Main St., a new concept called Louie's Reserve opens Wednesday and Thursday for grand-opening events, keeping the same patio and piano that made the address a Plaza-adjacent fixture while introducing an entirely reworked, wine-focused menu.

The rebrand comes courtesy of restaurateur Whitney VinZant, who purchased Café Trio from founders Chris Youngers and Tai Nguyen, according to the Kansas City Star. Youngers and Nguyen originally opened Café Trio at 3535 Broadway Blvd. in 2004 before moving it to its current Main Street location in 2009. VinZant told the Star the culinary direction and concept were enough of a departure from Café Trio to require an entirely new name. What Stays and What's New

Not everything is changing. Louie's Reserve keeps the patio, the piano, and — per the Star's reporting — the over-the-top holiday decorations and live music that longtime regulars associated with Café Trio. Some former Café Trio team members are staying on, joining new staff pulled from other Whitney VinZant restaurants.

The physical space has changed more dramatically. VinZant reworked the ceilings, walls, decor, tables and chairs, and the dining room now features wood floors alongside leopard-print carpet, per the same Star report. Jessica Trader, who previously worked at Louie's Wine Dive in Overland Park and has spent five years with W. VinZant Restaurants, will serve as Louie's Reserve's director. She described the concept to the Star as a more elevated but approachable evolution of the original Louie's Wine Dive, built in part on requests from regular customers of VinZant's other restaurants. Head chef Nash de Jesus, who has worked for the company for two years, is running the kitchen.

A Wine-Paired Menu Built on the Original Louie's Concept

The menu pairs every dish with a specific wine, most entrées priced between $20 and $25, and includes a reimagined shrimp diablo, pan-seared salmon, rigatoni bolognese, red wine-braised short rib, and a mix of burgers, pasta and Asian dishes, according to the Star. The wine-heavy format traces back to the original Louie's Wine Dive, which opened near Drake University in Des Moines in 2012 inside a renovated bagel shop and seamstress studio, pioneering a policy that let guests order any bottle on the wine list by the glass, per W. VinZant Restaurants. The brand later expanded to Kansas City with a Waldo location in 2012 and an Overland Park location on West 119th Street in 2015 — though the Waldo location has since closed.

Café Trio's own menu, which for years featured dishes like the Mac Daddy and Prince Edward Island mussels, is being retired along with the name. Louie's Reserve is aiming to draw new customers who may never have set foot in Café Trio, while the company works to keep loyalists who came for the mussels or the piano bar coming back for the wine list instead.

Giving Back and Growing a Portfolio

Half of the proceeds from Louie's Reserve's grand-opening evenings will go to Children's Mercy and Vivent Health, the Star reports. Children's Mercy Kansas City runs its primary pediatric hospital complex on Gillham Road and announced a $1 billion expansion in April to add a new acute patient tower with updated NICU and PICU facilities, according to KCTV5. Vivent Health, meanwhile, established Kansas City's first comprehensive HIV Medical Home in 2021 through a merger with Thrive Health Connection, and now serves local individuals living with HIV/AIDS, per Vivent Health.

Louie's Reserve is the latest addition to a fast-growing restaurant empire. VinZant bought BRGR Kitchen and Taco Republic in 2019 and has since added Gram & Dun, The Brew Top, Waldo Pizza and The Heritage — the Plaza restaurant formerly known as Bo Lings. The company's plans for American Fire at the former Houlihan's building in Fairway recently fizzled, despite the Fairway City Council's approval of a development agreement on December 8, 2025, according to the Johnson County Post. VinZant has also moved fast elsewhere, partnering with Argosy Casino & Hotel in Riverside to build a second, 250-seat Gram & Dun location, per Kansas City Magazine.

According to Kansas City - Federal Reserve, labor constraints have contributed to high wage growth in the sector, cost pressures and food-services inflation.

The Plaza-area dining scene has been in flux for the company more broadly. VinZant closed his Italian concept Va Bene in Prairie Village in late July after lease negotiations failed, Hoodline previously reported, transferring most employees and shifting signature scratch-made pasta dishes to sister venues including Louie's Wine Dive in Overland Park and Gram & Dun on the Plaza. That reshuffling arrives as the Country Club Plaza corridor sees a wave of investment, including the $35 million Cocina 47 development at 604 W. 47th Street that recently added V Modern Italian to its lineup, according to Startland News.
