Mission Bay now has a waterfront coffee stop, and this one comes with the rare San Francisco amenity of outdoor seating with a view. Zócalo Coffeehouse opened at the Mission Creek Pavilion yesterday, turning a mostly event-oriented park building into an everyday hangout for espresso, food and creek-watching.
Zócalo opened its first San Francisco location with coffee, espresso drinks and fresh food at the Mission Creek Pavilion. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department said in its launch announcement that the café has outdoor seating overlooking Mission Creek, will roll out a full menu soon and is open daily with expanded hours.
Mission Creek Pavilion Was Built For A Café
The 1,000-square-foot pavilion was designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, patios and views toward Mission Creek and the adjacent esplanade. The park's original RFP specifically sought a café or recreational concession to bring more regular activity to the space.
The setting is more than a pretty backdrop. According to the city's park listing, Mission Creek Park South also includes an amphitheater, lawn areas, an esplanade and public restrooms, while the larger park complex offers courts, a dog park, picnic areas and a boat launch.
Zócalo Won A Publicly Sought Mission Bay Lease
The café is the payoff from a city process that began with a February 2025 request for proposals. At the Recreation and Park Commission meeting, staff said three Bay Area small businesses submitted proposals and the department received more than 200 public comments before selecting Zócalo, according to the commission transcript.
Earlier this year, Mission Bay Citizens Advisory Committee minutes described plans for coffee, food, baked goods, a designated espresso bar, a food-preparation area and outdoor seating. The minutes also said Zócalo was targeting a spring opening and proposed hours stretching from early morning into the evening, with adjustments based on neighborhood needs, as outlined by the Mission Bay advisory committee.
The East Bay business brings an established community-café model to the new outpost. Zócalo lists its original San Leandro coffeehouse, an Oakland café and a pocket café inside the Hayward Library.
More Mission Creek Park Space Is On The Way
The opening also arrives as the park around it is set for a larger expansion. San Francisco Recreation and Parks says the Mission Creek Park South Extension will add 5.7 acres of open space west of the pavilion, with construction beginning in mid-2026 and the new parkland expected to open in mid-2028, according to the project schedule.
For now, the café gives Mission Bay residents a new place to grab coffee before a walk, linger after a dog-park visit or simply sit beside the creek without needing a special event on the calendar. The waterfront finally has a daily ritual to go with the scenery.
