A Sunday evening collision on a Carlsbad freeway off-ramp allegedly turned into a violent attack, with a man accused of stabbing one person and striking another before fleeing. The suspect was arrested shortly afterward, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 7 PM on the Interstate 5 off-ramp to Tamarack Avenue, according to Fox5 San Diego. CHP identified the suspect as 49-year-old Orlando Query Chavez, who was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado when he collided with a white Silverado driven by a 23-year-old woman.
After the crash, Chavez allegedly approached the white Silverado’s 27-year-old passenger and stabbed him, then struck the driver. Both victims were taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment, though officials have not released details about their conditions.
The white Silverado drove away from the scene, while the black Silverado fled after the alleged attack. Chavez was located shortly afterward, arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, NBC 7 San Diego reported.
Investigation Continues As Motive Remains Unclear
Chavez faces multiple charges, including assault and attempted murder, but an arrest is not a conviction. CHP has not said what prompted the confrontation, and the investigation into the crash and alleged attack remains active.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded video is being asked to contact the California Highway Patrol. Investigators have not indicated whether additional arrests or charges are expected.
