A person was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Thursday night after a shooting near Centre Street and Brookshire Boulevard in Northwest Charlotte, with medics responding to the scene around 7:30 p.m. and police releasing no information about a suspect.
Emergency crews transported one victim from the scene, according to WCNC, which confirmed the injuries were life-threatening. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the shooting, and WCCB Charlotte reports that a medic unit transported one person to the hospital with serious injuries after officers responded to the scene on Centre Street, just off Brookshire Boulevard. WCCB said it would provide new information as it becomes available, and as of the latest reporting, no suspect description had been released.
A Street With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first violent incident to hit the same stretch of Centre Street. Back in April, a man attacked a woman aboard a CATS city bus on the 400 block of Centre Street before fleeing before officers arrived, as reported by WSOC TV. That earlier assault, paired with Thursday's shooting, underscores ongoing safety concerns for residents and transit riders along the corridor.
Centre Street and the broader Brookshire Boulevard area fall under CMPD's Freedom Division, which patrols Northwest Charlotte out of its station at 4150 Wilkinson Boulevard, according to the City of Charlotte. That division has also seen a string of other violent incidents nearby. Hoodline reported that a daytime shooting near I-85 left one victim fighting for life in April, and in March, two teenagers were sentenced in Mecklenburg County Court for a fatal January 2025 shooting outside a NAPA Auto Parts store along Brookshire Boulevard near Oakdale Road.
Police Enforcement Efforts Continue Amid Mixed Trends
CMPD's Freedom Division has not been passive in the face of these incidents. In July, the division took part in a multi-agency operation dubbed “Queen City Safe,” which led to nine arrests and the recovery of six illegal firearms across Northwest Charlotte, including the Brookshire Boulevard area. The sweep reflects ongoing efforts by police to get illegal weapons off the street even as violent crime persists in pockets of the division.
Citywide numbers tell a more encouraging story. CMPD midyear public safety data published this month showed an 8% drop in overall violent crime and a 4% decline in aggravated assaults across Charlotte during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. That followed a broader downturn in 2025, when the department's annual report showed a 21% decrease in violent crime and a 13% drop in homicides, alongside a 79% clearance rate for homicide investigations. Still, individual incidents like Thursday's shooting show that the corridor around Brookshire Boulevard and Centre Street continues to see concentrated violence even as citywide figures trend downward.
Potential Charges Under State Law
Should a suspect be identified and arrested, North Carolina law lays out steep penalties for shootings that cause serious injury. Under North Carolina General Statute 14-32, discharging a firearm and causing serious injury is classified as a Class E felony carrying up to 88 months in prison, or a Class C felony carrying up to 231 months in prison if intent to kill is proven, according to Kurtz & Blum, PLLC.
No arrests have been announced in connection with Thursday's shooting, and the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Charlotte Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers, which offers anonymous tipsters cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to arrests or weapon seizures, and up to $5,000 in cases involving homicides.
