After a 2024 crash left Charlotte mother Eleanor Shell facing a traumatic brain injury and a recovery with no neat finish line, she built a nonprofit for families living through their own prolonged crises. Borrowed Hope is designed around the small, ordinary moments that can disappear when a family is consumed by medical, financial, or emotional strain.
Shell was struck by a car while pushing her then-7-month-old daughter in a stroller, according to WSOC-TV. A fundraising campaign through Help Hope Live identifies the accident as occurring on June 12, 2024, and describes the continuing medical and financial burden on Shell and her family.
Shell, a former pastor with a background in nonprofit work, told WSOC-TV that traumatic brain injuries can affect “every part” of a person’s body and soul. She calls the drawn-out period after a crisis “the long middle,” a stretch that can involve sudden parental death, abandonment, cancer, or a child’s extended stay in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Borrowed Hope Targets The Long Middle
Borrowed Hope’s mission is less about grand rescues than giving families room to breathe. The organization says on its website that it provides respite grants and free community gatherings intended to restore joy, togetherness, and a sense of normal life.
In practice, that can mean a movie date, a trip for ice cream, gas cards, or snacks. Those offerings may sound modest, but Shell told WSOC-TV that long-term hardship can make even basic family pleasures vanish.
A Recovery Still In Progress
Shell’s own recovery remains unfinished. She said some days are still difficult and that there are simple things she cannot yet do, but she keeps trying in part because she wants her children to see that persistence.
Borrowed Hope is accepting family nominations and offering ways for volunteers, artists, sponsors, and resource partners to get involved through its website. For Shell, the nonprofit is a way to pass along the kind of support her family received after the crash—help that does not pretend the hard season is over, but makes it a little less lonely.
